Slim Jim Banjos – Jim Heasell
Jim was a time served Master Craftsman in wood through boat building before moving across into being a banjo luthier. Jim has an extraordinary ear and understanding of how different woods perform sonically. He has worked on and set up a few banjos I play and turned them into the best they can be. I made two suggestions to alter one particular very beautiful banjo, and his response both times was ‘I wouldn’t, I’ll do it if you want me to, but I wouldn’t’. I admire that level of integrity enormously, and for me if you chose to view someone as a mentor (due to their skill and experience) in what you aspire to, it is absolute….so the banjo will be worked on the way Jim advised and I will learn and develop all the better with an instrument which his experience will alter in the right way.
Chuck Lee Banjos – Chuck Lee
I asked Chuck Lee if he could help with information about a banjo made by him in 2005 I had purchased from another player. Chuck, as is well documented by all who have been in contact with him, could not have been more helpful, generous or encouraging in his response. I am fortunate to play three different Chuck Lee banjos, and for me the warmth, generosity and humanity of the person is present in sound of the instruments he creates.
